The Appalachian Mountains are a significant mountain range in the east of the North American continent. The mountains separate the temperate coastal plains along the Atlantic Ocean from the Mississippi River valley and the more arid Great Plains beyond. The mountains are sometimes called the Western Hills in Ne-Issan, and form part of the western border of that country, although in the north the borders expand west of the range to the shores of the Great Lakes.
